She's Not a Flower in a Fire

While studying abroad in Morocco, I befriended a stranger. One of the beautiful aspects of this country is the warmth and hospitality this culture nurtures in the people. Whilst walking down the streets of Rabat, I quickly made a friend who was eager to practice her English with an American. I was also eager to have as many “local” friends to maximize my short time in the country. Little did I know that this friendship would uncover so much more.

Abla Oumidouch is a 20-year-old Moroccan from Azilal, a small Berber town in the High Atlas Mountains, two hours outside of Marrakech. She is the first girl to practice karate from her small town, and the second female in her family to pursue higher education. Quite an anomaly in her small town, but a smaller part of a trend in urban cities across Morocco - young girls migrating to complete their studies. Learning more about her story, I wanted to share it with the world. Michelle Lee, a fellow video journalist, and I , shadowed Abla and her family. This is my photo journalist story. Also we created a multimedia piece, which encompassed life for Abla in Morocco.
